It really is an extraordinary statement, when you think about it.
Amazing indeed. I'm starting to like this guy. He also seems to be initiating a major effort to engage the laity - you know, Catholics who aren't priests or anything - on their needs and opinions. I don't think any Pope has done that in my lifetime.

He's my favorite pope in my lifetime, by far. Among other things, he seems to have a genuine humility and lack of materialism that's shocking in someone with that degree of worldly power. It's also a continuing source of amusement to see right-wing Catholics like Ross Douthat attempt to grapple with statements like this one.
